Most websites are about information if nothing else, and information is perishable.

The content of your site may be made obsolete by events or changes in the product or service, or by evolutionary changes in marketing strategy. External references may change, causing the links to fail. It is therefore necessary to constantly monitor these references to keep up with the changes.

A website that is out of date or doesn't work gives a very bad impression.
